More than one hundred states have posted diplomatic missions in Brussels, accredited to the European Union. Similarly The European Commission has over one hundred delegations worldwide. The Delegation of the European Commission to the State of Israel was officially opened in 1981 - as a diplomatic mission. The Delegation is responsible for managing official relations between Israel and the European Commission. The Head of Delegation is accredited as the official representative of the European Commission and is an ambassador.
The Delegation deals with six main fields: political, economic, projects, information, culture and science. In the political field the Delegation deals mostly with the study and analysis of the political system and political events in Israel, and reports on these to the Commission offices in Brussels. It also represents the Commission's position in contacts with senior Israeli decision makers.
In the economic field the Delegation is in regular contact with government ministries, dealing with issues that are of importance to the Commission. It also deals with a range of issues connected with the EU-Israel agreements and provides professional information to Israeli organizations that wish to carry out economic activities in Europe. Additionally, the Delegation provides information on economic events that take place in Europe and are relevant to Israel, such as for example, the single currency - the euro - and reports to the Commission in Brussels about relevant economic events in Israel.
The scientific field:
Since 1996 Israel has been the only non-European country fully associated to the EU's research funding programmes. Scientific and Research & Development (R&D) co-operation can play key roles in many different respects as regards relations between Israel and Europe. Indeed, besides pooling Israeli and European expertise on research and technological development for mutual social and business benefits, scientific cooperation must be considered as a vital instrument to maintain a sustainable collaboration between people and organisations, promoting partnerships that can survive difficult political contexts.
